Objective
Investigate how rhetorical devices are strategically deployed in real-world advertising. By analyzing ads within a single product category, you’ll identify patterns in persuasion tactics and evaluate their psychological impact.
Instructions
Step 1: Select a Product Category
Choose one product category (e.g., cars, skincare, fast food, sports apparel). All 10 ads must belong to this category but represent different brands/products.
Step 2: Collect Ads
Visit www.adsoftheworld.com and gather 10 advertisements (mix of print, digital, or video ads). Ensure they:
Are publicly available (no private campaigns).
Use at least 5 different rhetorical devices (e.g., hyperbole, metaphor, personification, alliteration, antithesis).
Step 3: Analyze Each Ad
For each ad, create one presentation slide with the following:
Rhetorical Device Identification
Name the device (e.g., “Metaphor”).
Explain how it functions:
How does the device deviate from literal language?
What comparison, exaggeration, or pattern does it use?
Example:
“Nike’s ‘Just Do It’ uses a metaphor framing exercise as a heroic act of defiance, implying the product unlocks inner strength.”
Psychological Impact
Analyze how the device influences the audience:
Does it create urgency? Elicit emotion? Build credibility?
Which cognitive bias or trigger does it exploit (e.g., FOMO, social proof)?
Example:
“The metaphor taps into consumers’ desire for self-improvement, associating Nike with personal triumph rather than just footwear.”
Evidence
Include a screenshot or video clip of the ad.
Highlight the specific text/image where the device appears (e.g., circle the slogan, timestamp a video moment).
Step 4: Presentation Structure
Your presentation must include:
Title Slide. Your name, course, product category.
Introduction. Briefly explain your category choice and why it’s rhetorically interesting.
Analysis Slides: One per ad (follow Step 3).
Conclusion. Compare tactics across the category. Which devices are most common? Why?
