It was early morning when the train stopped at the little station. Lanny came into the fresh morning air and took a deep breath. He was nearly home now. He smiled because he felt like the returning son. He had done what they had expected from him. The community had sent him to Cape Town to get a diploma. Well, he had done even better. He had got a diploma, and then he had got an arts degree. The son was returning with even more success. He smiled because the smell of the earth was in the air; because the fine brown dust rose to his nose. It was a part of home. Lanny walked to the far end of the platform where his cases had been put. There was no special place at the little station where he could leave his cases. This was not Cape Town. This was home. He took his cases and approached the ticket conductor to give him his ticket. Coldly, the man looked him up and down. “Fine day,” Lanny said. “I am returning home after seven years.” The ticket conductor was looking at him with dislike and said nothing. And suddenly Lanny remembered. Here one did not address a white man till he had spoken to you. How could he forget! He smiled bitterly, gave his ticket to the man and passed him feeling those eyes on his back as he was leaving the station. Well he had made a mistake. A dusty road curved away to the right. It led home. There was the blue sky and the bright morning sun. And the curving earth as far as the eye could see. Across the road there was a little coffee stall. A lorry stood a little way from the stall. Two men were drinking coffee. They were looking at Lanny. Lanny put his cases on the ground and stood looking along the sandy road. It was a long way. It will take him some hours to get home and the cases were heavy. This wasn’t Cape Town. He could not have any coffee here. The people were looking at him but he took no notice.
